TechAge Program Offerings – Fall 2024
Process to register for TechAge classes:
All TechAge classes are listed on our website, roctechage.org. Click the Register link below the desired class.
You are transferred to the Registration system for the class selected. The class description is displayed together with a calendar. Click the date highlighted in the calendar. Click the down arrow under either JCC member or Non-member and select “1”. Add tickets to cart.
To register for additional classes, click “Browse for other shows”. This directs you to a listing of all JCC events. Scroll down to find the class you want and click “See This Event”. Repeat the above process to register. Add tickets to cart and checkout.

iPhone/iPad Mobile Device Classes
iPhone/iPad – Basics
2 lessons. Hands on IN PERSON class. Max registrants: 10
Tuesdays, September 24 & October 1, 12:45pm – 3:00pm; TechAge Room
Get comfortable using your iPhone or iPad. In this 2-lesson course, you will learn iPhone and iPad basics: understand the physical device, practice several finger gestures, join a wireless network, be introduced to “widgets”, practice using your Phone app, and much more. After this class you will also be able to update your device’s operating system, monitor how much storage is being used, and backup your device. Course taught using a device updated to Apple’s newest operating system, but applicable to devices on older operating systems.

iPhone/iPad – Manage Your Apps

Tuesday, October 8, 12:45 pm –3:00pm; TechAge Room
Learn how to install and manage apps on your device. This will include using the standard App Store app, rearranging your app icons on Home Screens and Dock, grouping app icons, deleting/offloading apps, and more. Course taught using a device updated to Apple’s newest operating system (iOS 18), but applicable to older operating systems.

iPhone/iPad – Get Organized: Contacts

Learn how to manage contact data. This includes, phone numbers, email addresses, home address, etc. Learn how to create/manage custom contact lists and how to identify “Favorite” contacts for quick phone access in your Phone app. Course taught using a device updated to Apple’s newest operating system (iOS 18), but applicable to older operating systems.

What’s New In iOS 18? This 1 lesson class presents the more popular new features and biggest changes that could affect you! Differences between the iPhone and iPad will also be highlighted. Course taught using a device updated to the new operating system (iOS 18). Students have the option to update device(s) prior to class (advised) or just learn about the changes in demo mode.

Learn how maintain a calendar electronically. Add and edit “events”, get alerted about upcoming birthdays, and more. Course taught using an iPhone updated to Apple’s newest operating system (iOS 18), but applicable to older operating systems. Some “look and feel” differences on the iPad will also be addressed. Course includes new features in Apple’s latest operating system (iOS 18). Students should update devices to iOS 18 prior to class.

What’s New In iOS 18? This 1 lesson class presents more detail regarding the more popular new features and biggest changes that could affect you! Learn about the new standard apps, Passwords and Calculator. Understand how to customize the redesigned Control Center and use the new Controls gallery. You will also be able to practice personalizing the layout and look of your Home Screen including modifying icon and widget sizes. Course taught using a device updated to the new operating system (iOS 18). Students should update devices prior to class.

Using the standard Messages App, learn how to text with special effects, insert photos, use emojis and more. You will also learn how to customize your Message conversations display, edit a sent text, undo the send of a text, schedule when a text is sent, dictate texts, save photos received in text messages, and much more. Course includes new features in Apple’s latest operating system (iOS 18). Students should update devices to iOS 18 prior to class.

Borrow Electronic Materials from the Library Using the Libby app.
1 lesson. Hands on IN PERSON class. Max registrants: 10
This class will show you how to use the Libby app to find, place holds, and borrow digital ebooks, and audiobooks. See how to read or listen to your borrowed materials within the Libby app on your iPad or iPhone or Android device. Downloading your ebook to a Kindle device will also be shown. Course taught using a device updated to Apple’s newest operating system but applicable to devices on different operating systems. Concepts applicable to other devices.
Prerequisite: Libby app installed on your mobile device and initialized with your current library card.

iPhone/iPad – Using Podcasts

Tuesday, August 20, 12:45 pm –3:00pm, TechAge Room
Learn how to use the standard Podcasts app to find and play free audio programs about science, news, politics, business & finance, entertainment and more. You can also “catch up” on certain shows previously broadcast on TV by listening to “audio only” podcasts of these shows. Course includes new features in Apple’s latest operating system (iOS 17). Students should update devices prior to class.

iPhone/iPad – Advanced Organizing & Editing Photos
2 lessons. Hands on IN PERSON class. Max registrants: 10
Using the standard Photo App, advanced photo organizing tools are covered in this 2-lesson class. This includes detailed instruction for the People (& Pets) album, exploring the For You view with emphasis on Memories, Look Up and Cutout features, Custom Folders, and Shared Albums/Library. You will also learn how to modify the date/time and location associated with images in your Photo Library. As a bonus, you will also learn how to use some of the basic photo editing tools.
Course includes new features in Apple’s latest operating system (iOS 17). Students should update devices prior to class.

iPhone/iPad – Customize the Look of your Lock and Home Screen
1 lesson. Hands on IN PERSON class. Max registrants: 10
Learn how to customize the display of your app icons on your Home Screen for a more decluttered look and easier access. Replace app icons with widgets that provide information at a glance. Understand the usefulness of the App Library. Learn how to customize the display of your Lock Screen with useful information. Course taught using a device updated to Apple’s latest operating system (iOS 17) but applicable to devices on iOS 16.

iPhone/iPad – More Texting Using the Messages App
1 lesson. Hands on IN PERSON class. Max registrants: 10
Using the standard Messages app, learn more advanced tools including how to copy and forward texts, send/receive audio texts, create and then use your own Memoji in texts, create stickers from your photos and use them in texts, manage Group messages, and more.
Course includes new features in Apple’s latest operating system (iOS 17). Students should update devices prior to class.

Cut the Cable Cord – Stream TV Shows & Movies

The Best TV is NOT on cable! Are your friends talking about TV shows you can’t find? Do you feel left out? Tired of paying those high prices to the cable company for channels you never use? How do I decide which streaming services to use? This class will present the various types of streaming services and outline the steps to actually “Cut the Cable Cord” or just augment a basic cable plan!

iPhone/iPad – Tips & Tricks

This course presents useful “tips & tricks” to help you stay safe and more useful to you. Create a Contact Poster, learn how to transfer information wirelessly using an Apple technology called AirDrop, learn how to communicate your location in several ways, keep track of loved ones, set emergency contacts, use QR codes and much more. Course includes new features in Apple’s latest operating system (iOS 17). Students should update devices prior to class.

iPhone/iPad – Organizing Photos & Videos
2 lessons. Hands on IN PERSON class. Max registrants: 10
In this 2-lesson course, using the standard Photos App, learn how to browse your photos/videos in several ways, enter captions, organize them into albums, search for them, and share them with friends and family. Learn how your photos are automatically organized in multiple ways, e.g. by person/pet in the People/Pet Album, by location in the Places Album. You will also learn options for storing your images, sharing your images, and syncing them across devices. Course includes new features in Apple’s latest operating system (iOS 17). Students should update devices prior to class.
